At one time the vast majority of folk on Harris, and much of the rest of the Hebrides, lived in this type of accommodation. Today only a few survive with most being in ruins having been deserted for the superior white houses which replaced them towards the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Some have been restored to how they would have appeared when last lived in but a very small number have been fully renovated to todays modern standards.
